"Mūzika Diskoklubos" is compilation of Latvian discoclub music. This LP has always confused me, there's another comp with same name, which isn't good really. Also this one has only two performers; while Eolika is pretty famous, and they have some tracks, which have been loved among cosmic balearic scene, their tracks on this LP are really poor. So it is easy to forget that other tracks are pretty strong instrumentals by unknown group - Vjačeslav Mitrohins' instrumental group. Actually he was guitarist of Modo, cool jazzrock group, he played on their good first 7".
This song "Gājēju Motīvs" is really interesting in the context of reggae-not-reggae scene. So have a listen.martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-57656393335728225172013-11-12T13:22:00.000+02:002013-11-12T13:22:07.284+02:00vatra

it is Ukrainian folk song. played by one of their most famous VIAs, Vatra. it's taken from their only LP, released first time in 1974.
all songs on LP are arrangements of local folk music. though there isn't many western influences, you can find some funkier parts from two songs. particularly i like this track with psychedelic jew harp breakdown. actually first track has also jew harp breakdown. also track "Ivana Kupala" has good groovy intro, but it's something for serious Melodija collector.

quick look through wikipedia told me that they were actually folk-jazz-rock group. even though it says on sleeve that tracks are arranged by B. Kudla, these are mostly arranged by previous leader M. Manuljak, who was repressed by officials for not making any cooperation with them.
It's about time that I post this link to my blog too. As at the moment it has got almost 20000 listens, then let's make this number bigger.
My friend DJ Scientist put together amazing mix for legendary Solid Steel radioshow presented by Ninja Tune. This mix consists of Melodiya records, specifically only records by VIA groups. Every dedicated Melodiya collector and fan knows what it means. VIAs were just your typical pop or rock or beat groups, they usually had to record some dreadful tracks for workers and party, but sometimes officials weren't around and they managed to put one groovy/funky/fuzzy track into record.
DJ Scientist has managed to collect the best VIA records and put together great mix. It's really well-crafted, it never gets boring, it's not just show-offing your collection type mix, it really keeps interesting.
People, who usually question my Melodiya love, have commented on it positively.
So I hope for more mixes from you, but now we can enjoy this one.

you can read about background of mix from his facebook:
http://www.facebook.com/djscientist1

PS DJ Scientist is also distributing our Kuman collection. As it's sold out from label and in Estonia, it's probably best way to get it.
meistriteos on valmis!
valisime haruldastelt Meloodia plaatidelt parimad palad, lisasime ühe laivsalvestuse, ja tegime kogumiku Jaan Kumani ansambli lugudest. jazzfunk parimal kujul 1970ndatest. imeline, et need üldse kunagi avaldati, sama kenad on Kumani seaded ja parimate eesti muusikute kokkumäng.
"Hei, poisid, pingutage" kuulete Tiit Paulust mängimas iseehitatud wah-pedaali.

Üleval pool on esimene lugu nende 1989 aastal ilmunud Melodija plaadilt.

http://www.baranrecords.com/

Bioconstructor was one of the best synthpop groups from Moscow, active in 1986-1990. They were more serious than most of their contemporaries, even though all of them being influenced by Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and Ultravox. Their music has been described as techno-romantic and now you can put them under "soviet wave" tag. In 1989 they were lucky to release split LP on Melodiya label, and it's really strong material for government funded label in the end of 80s.
I have put up one track from album.

If you're interested in Bioconstructor music, you should definitely check out Baran records from Germany, who have released 7" single by them. It includes title track from album and one unreleased track. Hopefully there will be more from them on this label. Bioconstructor's singer Alexandr Yakovlev left group and formed Bio, he also wrote music for Olga Voskonyan, whose track "Avtomobili" is now released on flexi-postcard by Baran. I think it's really special release.
I love reissue labels, which are run by enthusiasts; what's more surprising that someone cares about soviet-time music enough to make reissues. If you are interested in supporting, order those records.
here's nice track taken from ultradiskopanorama youtube channel. popstar Viktors Lapčenoks from Latvia is touching groovy prog-pop land. he was collaborating a lot with all big Latvian composers, including Raimonds Pauls, and was involved in many of Pauls' solo author albums with Nora Bumbiere. i have featured track from duo's earlier LP on my blog too, which kind of continues same theme.

Devcata was girl power group from Moscow, they had quite few records in 70s, but I found first their ep from 1981. Obviously it has great picture sleeve, all girl group with cool instruments - neat looking guitar, heavy Eastern European organ and some weird box on top of it. It's tape delay, for a moment I hoped it's something from USSR, but inspecting closely, it's English-built Watkins Copicat; pretty cool!
Now to the music... unfortunately it's pretty poor, but full of dreamy effects, haha! I put up first track off 7", which has less unbearable parts and is more upbeat.martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-34511712140378797812012-11-23T13:39:00.000+02:002012-12-11T12:55:46.344+02:00mobile

Mobile - Kvartett (J. Schaffer)
Mobile on ansambel, mis muutus natuke hiljem Muusik Seifiks või midagi taolist, sest samas ilmus see plaat, kui Musik-Seif oli üle Venemaa kuulus bänd. see on nende ainus vinüülplaat, singlile mahtus neli lugu, lindistatud 1978-1983. eesti muusika sõbrad leiavad siit varajase Anne Veski lauldud "Ootan sind" või ka vähe plaadistatud Ahti Nurmise, nt hiti "Troika". rare groove sõprasid ootab plaadi lõpus aga instrumentaal "Kvartett", mille autoriks on Janne Schaffer, tuntud rootsi kitarrist, nii nõutud stuudiomuusik kui ka mõned sooloplaadid välja andnud.
EDIT Tänu targemale lugejale sain teada, et originaallugu on "Dr Abraham", Janne Schafferi teiselt sooloalbumilt "Andra"

here's a little 7" single by Estonian group Mobile, it's their only record, released in 1984 and recorded 1978-1983. most musicians went to cooler groups, this record also features young future star Anne Veski and unrecognized talent Ahti Nurmis. most tracks here are cool only for hardcore Estonian music fans, but rare groove people will find here instrumental "Kvartett", which is credited to famous Swedish guitarist Janne Schaffer. this track was discovered by my mate Aku at Redhill Records, which is place to visit for Eastern European records in Helsinki, Finland.
PS Thanks to our reader we know that original version is "Dr Abraham" from Janne Schaffer's second LP "Andra".martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-18864581146391066362012-11-15T09:00:00.000+02:002012-11-15T21:00:58.035+02:00veselõi roman

if you're lucky to visit Tallinn, there's now even more reasons to be happy - we have the real kind of second hand vinyl store in Old Town, Tallinn. address Voorimehe 9. some of you know that Raamatukoi used book store sold records before, now they opened new store only for collectibles and mainly records. they have everything - mostly Eastern European records, some expensive rares and some bargains, records divided by genres, a lot of classical, and knowledgeable seller. they are only missing new arrivals crate though. take a lot of money with and listen to interesting looking record - you might have nice score! or not.
bought this flexi this summer in same store; seller handed me pack of Melodiya flexis with Georgian letters - he knew what gets me excited. even though they looked funky and unreadable, they sounded more like hybrid of opera and pop. best flexi was this film music one, also from Tbilisi. nice jazz instrumental, other side has jazzy pop songs.
after long hiatus i try to be more active for a while. also i have some exciting news to share with you soon.
now let's start with nicest jazz record i found about year ago. it started as usual - fellow record collector had been to that lonely record crate at street fair before me and pulled out cool-looking record. just month later i found excellent copy from reusing center, that's how karma works. i knew Goloshchekin, but didn't know this record. he was main figure in Leningrad jazz scene. in 1979 released LP where he plays alone up to 10 instruments, thankfully not at same time. it is nice breezy album, but sounds too polished. here's earlier LP with modern jazz and bossanovas, also some vocal jazz tracks, with lovely Elvira Trafova, if i'm not wrong, husband of David. i don't like english language evergreens, but this wordless vocal track is super, long track with all kinds of emotions, keeps interesting during all the track.
there's earlier LP with same orchestra, also 7", which i hope to hear one day.martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-89030288986772801782012-02-16T20:53:00.000+02:002012-02-16T20:53:00.770+02:00nerija

well, i'll try to post some Estonian tracks in February, but before i have to do something with my promise to post more Lithuanian tracks. so as today is Lithuanian independence day, I'll post one.
Nerija seemed to be pretty famous group in Soviet Lithuania, they released many albums during all their years, even one 2LP. what's sad, every album has only 1 good track, though usually it's awesome one.
so in future there will be more Nerija posted here, but today i'll post my find from last summer when I was in Kaunas and Vilnius. picked up some Nerija records, but this one was new to me. i guess it's their 1st album. Sampl and R. Brown. more mysteries. anyway it's quite groovy single, even if there's not breaks or any other fancy stuff. nice electric piano, nice guitars. first side is slower groovy downtempo jazz. other side starts with so called ballad and second track is 2 minutes short groovy jazz funk. which you can hear here. other tracks will be hopefully available at soviet groove blog.martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-15364729424576042302011-11-10T22:09:00.000+02:002011-11-10T22:09:06.738+02:00modo

I wonder why I haven't featured Modo records in my blog, even though it's one of my favorite Latvian group. I got their two EPs early in my Melodiya collecting history. At first they were led by Raimonds Pauls, they are also featured on R. Pauls "Naktsputni" LP, later they were led by Zigmars Liepins, another keyboard wizard from Latvia. Modo first EP should be known through blogs, it's good fusion single with two good tracks. Bonus is great picture sleeve, which features also someone shredding on organ.
My big favorite is Modo disco hit "Spele Vel", I know two local DJ's who have been rocking it for a while. There's scarce 7", but it's also on common Melodiya compilation "Igraj Eshhjo". Then there's single with blue cover, I haven't listened to it for a while, but I think it was pretty boring. So I had impression their later stuff isn't good, including that Modo 7" (C62-11841-2). And I totally ignored it at Riga's flea market this summer.
Recently I bought box of seven inch singles, because it contained infamous Disko orkestra 7" with cover of "For What It's Worth", known from expensive LP. This box had also great copy of Modo single. I was surprised to find 3 good disco tracks out of 4 songs. That's good. You get honest soviet disco "Stress" and slow burner "Romeo" by my fave Mirdza Zivere, and atmospheric cosmic funk "Kustiba", all full of strings, wonderful vocals and cool keyboards.
I have uploaded "Kustiba", best track on EP.martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-31795015370087146182011-09-07T23:26:00.001+03:002011-09-07T23:36:38.235+03:00tiit paulusTiit Pauluse muusikasaade

meie sõber Kristjan Jansen kohtus suvel eesti kitarristi Tiit Paulusega, vestles muusika teemadel ja lindistas ka vestlust üles, millest pani kokku raadiosaate, mida on võimalik kuulata tema kodulehelt. saade on huvitav ja ka rohkete helinäidetega.
suur tänu Kristjanile, kes puudutas jälle seda huvitavat hetke eesti jazzmuusika ajaloost, mille kohta on enamasti infopuudus.

well, looks like i have been on summer vacation. there's no excuse for not posting meanwhile, but indeed i have been busy and lazy: moving to new flat, enjoying summer, not enjoying summer, listening records and writing emails. anyway on first week of august i was on "work" trip to Baltic states looking for records. i found some great Melodiya jazz records and discovered myself few lithuanian groovy records. got rare Imants Kalnins ost 7" and found few spares for my friends. though the best find seems to be most usual, most innocent looking record, which i bought only because it was cheap and it had few familiar names on it.
record i'm speaking about is soundtrack to movie "Uznai menja". i haven't seen it, but its soundtrack is written by Zatsepin, famous russian film music composer. his music have been featured in many films during last decades and he have always used modern styles. i have heard minimal jazzfunk on "Sannikov Land", fuzzy psych on "Between Sky and Earth" and synthsoul on "June 31st". though there have been some boring music too, so it wasn't very safe to buy this unknown record. thankfully i was surprised when i heard first track. wonderful, atmospheric theme song with lovely vocals by Tatjana Antsiferova, with dance rhythms, maybe it is unknown cosmic classic. or whatever. Tatjana's name was another sign of quality, she appeared also on "June 31st" soundtrack. she seemed to be quite known singer, but always stayed in the background. for example she was singing in films, but she didn't appear on screen. Tatyana has cute voice, at least she doesn't try to be opera singer. Araks is group responsible for music on album. they released a lot of records, but none came close to this soundtrack. though there's some good earlier tracks, but i don't think they are available on vinyl.
you can see song in actual context in movie from this videoclipmartinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-219467458855259002011-05-02T15:42:00.000+03:002011-05-02T15:42:47.042+03:00mirdza zivere

It was first Melodiya record I bought as second hand, it was then I started buying old vinyl records consciously, looking for good tunes, funk, jazz, rock. It was around 9 years ago, I had found Soulstrut forum and Rehash guys were posting there, and from their website I heard Josephino first time, though they had only picture of label, not cover. Apparently I had no idea, where to find old records then, fortunately there was functioning record store from Soviet Time in Tallinn's Old Town, where you could actually buy some old Melodiya stock, still on the racks after ten years of publishing, I had bought there Mahavok LP (estonian synthpop) as new item, but they didn't have second hand records there before until some point. So I was first time digging for old records and found this Mirdza Zivere I had read about, it was good start for my long time passion. Unfortunately I didn't find Zalatnay Sarolta LPs as I had hoped :D I bought also LP by Estonian fusion group Kaseke. So these were my first finds. I didn't see Zivere LP for a long time here in Estonia, it's still quite obscure here, though it's easier to find it in Riga. It should be more popular, as one side is produced by Latvian superstar Raimonds Pauls and other by famous Latvian composer Zigmars Liepins.
Story of my first digging has also bitter part - as I stepped into store I saw guy walking away from cashier with Collage "Käokiri" under his arm, why must I cry (it was onlyt two years ago when I finally found copy for myself, actually I found two copies same day).

Mirdza Zivere tracks on Zigmars Liepins official sitemartinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-29211448237206167382011-04-27T21:05:00.000+03:002011-04-27T21:05:00.661+03:00anatoli korolev

С60-06009-10

Anatoli Korolev was russian pop singer, who had started singing in famous vocal group "Druzhba". In 1975 was released his solo album with VIA Vesjolye golosa. I had his single with same group from 1974, which had some nice instrumental background, even if poorly recorded, though vocals were bit boring, too professional. So few months back I found also LP, which shares some tracks with single, but has also some tracks, which have even better backings. Like track "Poyu o lyubvi" starts with nice fuzz guitar. I'll share with you song called "Mne ne nado zhalosti", with nice groovy band in the back and even if singer has too schooled voice, it is pleasant enough to like whole song.
Previous owner of my lp had put ranks behind all tracks, i have more records from same collection with those numbers. Obviously he had put worst mark to track I liked most!martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-48266323668020015822011-04-26T15:33:00.002+03:002011-05-14T14:53:11.200+03:00jazzitup 10. aprill 2011i was guest in DJ Orav's radioshow Jazzitup few weeks ago, it's still possible to listen it from stream. we played eclectic set of East Euro records, from rock to disco and even jazz. Yalla is interesting group from Uzbekistan, who wasn't afraid tp use their interesting ethnic background on their poprock songs. i suppose they made incredible music, but had to make compromises for recordings. They are known for album "Tri Kolodca" from 1982, which at first is unfortunately mainly in Russian (which paid for it, as they became very popular) and secondly even if it has some fantastic, perfect moments, like incredible intro of "Eto Lyubov" (It's Love), it doesn't have any good songs at all.
i was happy to buy Yalla single from local store recently, it was released in 1978, it has quite up-to-date sound for Uzbek/Soviet group for that time, thankfully it is better than LP. though here's also compulsory track by Tuhmanov and other songs are good, but not really something i would admit liking in public. so there's this one great song "Poj, dutar, v rukah dzhigita", nice new wave rock song with sitars or some other exciting instruments. i hope someone enjoys it!martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-12965390154974598432011-01-25T23:24:00.001+02:002011-04-24T21:21:23.358+03:00

Syabry - Distant Light
1986 C60 24697 008

by popular demand i'll post one modern soul nugget from my melodiya collection. here's Syabry, popular rock group from Belorussia, started releasing records from 1978. their records are full of modern production tricks, but have mostly have stayed bit boring, though i haven't heard their best lp from 1980. here's something reallly curious, it's their later less known album from 1986. i have no idea why i bought it. at home i listened to it and thought i'm idiot, but actually second track had some weird charm. really smooth song for russian machos, especially love vocals on chorus, damn, is it really that mysterious modern soul from Soviet Union. i have later shared it with some public and feedback has been positive. well, here new and old readers, Syabry.martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-66747928920220010802010-12-27T03:54:00.000+02:002010-12-27T03:54:00.128+02:00rocky

Pojushhie serdca - Poljot v nochi

ok, this track was posted at sovietgroove, but at first i have here scan of regular 7" label and second i just wanted to post it in Estonian. so enjoy russian version of "Gonna Fly Now" aka "Theme from Rocky" by Bill Conti, covered by Pojusshie Sertsa aka Singing Hearts. they recorded some of the funkiest tracks, available on their first album. this cover is really cool, no words, great scat vocals.martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13045001292179929148noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4898281047850506707.post-49827456843781398152010-12-27T03:50:00.002+02:002010-12-27T13:42:35.288+02:00estonian lp covers book<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 239px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaCjYklPTUqBHVO5GFjERfAkkN_351Z6314bDkXiADpbu3gDk6wnzS8aIYYrYSwV4EEf7j0S7c2odINc6yCGt_qb97Ai1vXRYTwoAAC25L4ypX9EDcG9R4XOZFj5fYx82_Hzg-yyd9wXIH/s320/PC273675.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5555326050333174114" />

Lõpuks on trükist ilmunud album "Eesti vinüülplaadiümbrised 1970.-1980. aastatest", autor Maile Tali. Ümbriseid oleks võinud rohkem olla, kindlasti mitmed klassikud on puudu.
