mirdza zivere

It was first Melodiya record I bought as second hand, it was then I started buying old vinyl records consciously, looking for good tunes, funk, jazz, rock. It was around 9 years ago, I had found Soulstrut forum and Rehash guys were posting there, and from their website I heard Josephino first time, though they had only picture of label, not cover. Apparently I had no idea, where to find old records then, fortunately there was functioning record store from Soviet Time in Tallinn's Old Town, where you could actually buy some old Melodiya stock, still on the racks after ten years of publishing, I had bought there Mahavok LP (estonian synthpop) as new item, but they didn't have second hand records there before until some point. So I was first time digging for old records and found this Mirdza Zivere I had read about, it was good start for my long time passion. Unfortunately I didn't find Zalatnay Sarolta LPs as I had hoped :D I bought also LP by Estonian fusion group Kaseke. So these were my first finds. I didn't see Zivere LP for a long time here in Estonia, it's still quite obscure here, though it's easier to find it in Riga. It should be more popular, as one side is produced by Latvian superstar Raimonds Pauls and other by famous Latvian composer Zigmars Liepins.
Story of my first digging has also bitter part - as I stepped into store I saw guy walking away from cashier with Collage "Käokiri" under his arm, why must I cry (it was onlyt two years ago when I finally found copy for myself, actually I found two copies same day).

anatoli korolev

С60-06009-10

Anatoli Korolev was russian pop singer, who had started singing in famous vocal group "Druzhba". In 1975 was released his solo album with VIA Vesjolye golosa. I had his single with same group from 1974, which had some nice instrumental background, even if poorly recorded, though vocals were bit boring, too professional. So few months back I found also LP, which shares some tracks with single, but has also some tracks, which have even better backings. Like track "Poyu o lyubvi" starts with nice fuzz guitar. I'll share with you song called "Mne ne nado zhalosti", with nice groovy band in the back and even if singer has too schooled voice, it is pleasant enough to like whole song.
Previous owner of my lp had put ranks behind all tracks, i have more records from same collection with those numbers. Obviously he had put worst mark to track I liked most!

jalla

C62-10083-84

i love this song. it will be never put to any funk or prog compilation of soviet music. if only some lunatic would do comp of perfect pop music from former ussr, it should be there. i'd put it next to my favorite estonian pop song "Sa haara kinni mu käest" by Music Seif. Yalla is interesting group from Uzbekistan, who wasn't afraid tp use their interesting ethnic background on their poprock songs. i suppose they made incredible music, but had to make compromises for recordings. They are known for album "Tri Kolodca" from 1982, which at first is unfortunately mainly in Russian (which paid for it, as they became very popular) and secondly even if it has some fantastic, perfect moments, like incredible intro of "Eto Lyubov" (It's Love), it doesn't have any good songs at all.
i was happy to buy Yalla single from local store recently, it was released in 1978, it has quite up-to-date sound for Uzbek/Soviet group for that time, thankfully it is better than LP. though here's also compulsory track by Tuhmanov and other songs are good, but not really something i would admit liking in public. so there's this one great song "Poj, dutar, v rukah dzhigita", nice new wave rock song with sitars or some other exciting instruments. i hope someone enjoys it!

Syabry - Distant Light
1986 C60 24697 008

by popular demand i'll post one modern soul nugget from my melodiya collection. here's Syabry, popular rock group from Belorussia, started releasing records from 1978. their records are full of modern production tricks, but have mostly have stayed bit boring, though i haven't heard their best lp from 1980. here's something reallly curious, it's their later less known album from 1986. i have no idea why i bought it. at home i listened to it and thought i'm idiot, but actually second track had some weird charm. really smooth song for russian machos, especially love vocals on chorus, damn, is it really that mysterious modern soul from Soviet Union. i have later shared it with some public and feedback has been positive. well, here new and old readers, Syabry.

rocky

Pojushhie serdca - Poljot v nochi

ok, this track was posted at sovietgroove, but at first i have here scan of regular 7" label and second i just wanted to post it in Estonian. so enjoy russian version of "Gonna Fly Now" aka "Theme from Rocky" by Bill Conti, covered by Pojusshie Sertsa aka Singing Hearts. they recorded some of the funkiest tracks, available on their first album. this cover is really cool, no words, great scat vocals.

estonian lp covers book

Lõpuks on trükist ilmunud album "Eesti vinüülplaadiümbrised 1970.-1980. aastatest", autor Maile Tali. Ümbriseid oleks võinud rohkem olla, kindlasti mitmed klassikud on puudu.
