this one must be one of well-known russian records outside of ex-ussr. over here it's pretty common, but not much known. of course, alla pugacheva herself is superstar. she is totally most known soviet singer, no doubt. there's a lot of crap on her lp's, but this one has few tasty backgrounds. like "sonet", which was sampled by some rapper called half dollar and it was featured on infamous compilation "dusty fingers".
this lp hides another gem, which i think is alla's best track ever. "buben shamana" should be translated as "shaman's tambourine". it's a tough disco-prog-funk styled pophit with nice instrumentals, great back vocals and even alla's voice is lovely here. check out also videoclip below from movie this song is featured. btw clip of Sonata is filmed in my hometown Tallinn.

Dj Willderness - Magnitizdat
nüüd unusta need halvad miksid, mis just linkisin ja kuula mu ameerika sõbra miksi.
now forget all the mediocre mixes i linked and listen great melodiya mix by my friend. that's what Will has to say:
This is my contribution to the 2009 waxidermy mixswap (record collectors make a mix and a copy for everyone participating). I call it Magnitizdat because that was the word for the industry of bootleg underground recordings in the USSR. It seemed to fit the hand made, illegitimate nature of the mix, even though the records on the mix are on the official state label, melodiya, not bootlegs. I spent a year collecting records on Melodiya on a heavy basis, all the time with this mix in mind as the final product. I ordered records from overseas, did trades with Martin, and also found a lot of these records in the USA. My interest came about because not many DJ's in the USA look for records from the USSR. It was a chance to make new discoveries. I learned others had discovered the wonders of Melodiya, but I could still bring this music to wider attention by presenting it in an exciting way. So I created a mix of some of the most exciting parts of the records I found, with the style of mixing that I like to hear.

Sieviešu vokālais ansamblis & Rīgas estrādes orķestris
Cīruli, cīruli
paari viimase nädala jooksul ostsin mitu läti vinüüli. suurtega me tutvusime, huvitavate piltidega singlid osutusid aga jamaks. samas paar tükki ilma pildita kuskilt 60ndata ja 70ndate vahetusest kandsid endas toredat kraami. muusikat tegemas jälle vanad tuttavad Zaķis, Vīgners ja Pauls.
käesoleval plaadil on läti rahvalaulud Raimonds Paulsi kaasaegsete seadetega. midagi sellist tegi ju eestis Collage ja olgem ausad, seda lugu kuulates tahaks ju tahtmatult võrrelda varase Collage'iga. sõna ciruli kõlab ka ju kahtlaselt eesti keele moodi. keegi peaks ikka siruli viskama. kerge interneti otsing paljastab, et lugu on eesti keeles ikka "Lõokene, lõokene".
pick of latvian singles i bought during last two weeks. this one didn't have picture sleeve, but it's earlier, somewhere from end of 60s and start of 70s. Raimonds Pauls has made latvian ethnical songs into contemporary pop songs. women vocal ensemble sings and riga's variety music orchestra, conducted by Mr. Pauls, plays music. as cīruli reminds very much estonian word 'siruli' (lie down) and it's folk song and there's girl choir, it sounds pretty much like latvian Collage. Collage is infamous estonian vocal group, who recorded very good LPs with estonian folk songs arranged in contemporary ways (pop and jazz and funk). cīruli is in latvian actually lark.

Dzied Nora Bumbiere un Viktors Lapčenoks LP
Jurjānu Andreja "Nabagu Deja" (Paupers' Dance by Jurjānu Andrejs)
G. Šimkus' instrumental ensemble
raske on mul midagi olulist öelda Nora Bumbiere ja Viktors Lapcenoksi kohta. Raimonds Pauls andis 70ndatel nendega koos välja mitu albumit, kord enda nime all, kord lauljate plaadina. eelpool mainisin, et nende plaatidel on väga tugevaid lugusid, muidugi leidub neil ka täiesti tavalist poppi, kuigi üleüldiselt tundub paaril varasemal albumil ikkagi olevat palju läänelikum sh psühhedeelsem õhkkond. lugusid on pikitud ka kergelt rahvamuusika elementidega või teatraalsusega. seesamune kerjuse tants mängib nendega, lugu koosneb eri osadest ja karakteridest, lugu ise näib tulevat kuskilt keskajast, sellele viitamas põnev flööt. käriseva kitarriga saab viidata jälle kerjuste räpasusele, kapitalismi kurjusele.
plaadi teisel poolel on kaks pikemat lugu paulsi sulest, plaadi esimene pool on tegelikult kirjutatud G. Šimkuse poolt, kelle instrumentaalansambel ka muusika eest hoolitseb. ta on mänginud varem ka R. Paulsi ansamblis.
this lp is my recent discover. i bought it because other side is written by R. Pauls and it's by singers he seemed to work a lot in 70s. second side has two longer songs, something like pop goes prog way. first side is backed by G. Šimkus ensemble, he was guitarist on some earlier Pauls records. standout track is name "paupers dance by jurjānu adrejs". i like it's idea of making western sounding rock track, it's little theatrical (also prog got little official appreciation thanks to that) and also folk elements. like you can describe poor people with rock guitars because of their dirtiness and capitalistic nature.

M. Vilcāne - Ligotāji
instrumentals ans. R Paula vad.
Seal on juhuslikult puhast kulda. Kuid mida varasemaks lähed, leiab veelgi paremat. Paar päeva tagasi sai mu kogu järjekordselt täiendust väga heade lugudega. Alustuseks aga üks vana lemmik, kuna sain ka teise koopia endale kindlustatud, võin seda tutvustada.
Minu lemmik lugu R. Paulsi sulest. Esiteks milline vahva kaanepilt. Teiseks milline tore foto tagakaanel. Tegu on küll autoriplaadiga koos sõnade autori Peteriga, kuid laulavad põhiliselt Nora Bumbiere ja Viktors Lapcenoks, sama punt on hljem veel mitu plaati välja andnud. Kuid selles suurepärases loos laulab Margarita Vilcāne. Lugu ise on vist seotud läti jaanipäeva tähistamisega. Milline suurepärane kompositsioon ja helide mäng, blablabla. Intensiivsed klahvipillid, head rütmid, filmilikkus. Kuskil silma jäänud võrdlus Broadcasti loominguga ei ole mitte vale.
Raimonds Pauls was most famous soviet popmusic composer, so we all should hate him, but I have something for him. Probably because my first digging find was Mirdza Zivere LP, which had one side by Raimonds Pauls instrumental group, as it's pretty funky album, one can make it's deductions. So I have picked up all cheap albums (more luck with LPs than EPs) with Raimonds Pauls name, made before 1980. This track from Jūras Balss LP is my favorite by him. Album is made with lyricist J. Peter and singers are Nora Bumbiere ja Viktors Lapcenoks, they have made with Pauls some other (killer) albums. On "Ligotāji" is singing Margarita Vilcāne, if I'm not wrong, this song is about Midsummer's Eve. This track reminds a lot of English group Broadcast or other old library and film music with it's weird atmosphere helped to become alive by different keyboards.
this album is available also on cd, support artists!
