vatra

it is Ukrainian folk song. played by one of their most famous VIAs, Vatra. it's taken from their only LP, released first time in 1974.
all songs on LP are arrangements of local folk music. though there isn't many western influences, you can find some funkier parts from two songs. particularly i like this track with psychedelic jew harp breakdown. actually first track has also jew harp breakdown. also track "Ivana Kupala" has good groovy intro, but it's something for serious Melodija collector.

quick look through wikipedia told me that they were actually folk-jazz-rock group. even though it says on sleeve that tracks are arranged by B. Kudla, these are mostly arranged by previous leader M. Manuljak, who was repressed by officials for not making any cooperation with them.

Jaan Kuman Instrumental Ensemble

meistriteos on valmis!
valisime haruldastelt Meloodia plaatidelt parimad palad, lisasime ühe laivsalvestuse, ja tegime kogumiku Jaan Kumani ansambli lugudest. jazzfunk parimal kujul 1970ndatest. imeline, et need üldse kunagi avaldati, sama kenad on Kumani seaded ja parimate eesti muusikute kokkumäng.
"Hei, poisid, pingutage" kuulete Tiit Paulust mängimas iseehitatud wah-pedaali.

Üleval pool on esimene lugu nende 1989 aastal ilmunud Melodija plaadilt.

Bioconstructor was one of the best synthpop groups from Moscow, active in 1986-1990. They were more serious than most of their contemporaries, even though all of them being influenced by Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and Ultravox. Their music has been described as techno-romantic and now you can put them under "soviet wave" tag. In 1989 they were lucky to release split LP on Melodiya label, and it's really strong material for government funded label in the end of 80s.
I have put up one track from album.

If you're interested in Bioconstructor music, you should definitely check out Baran records from Germany, who have released 7" single by them. It includes title track from album and one unreleased track. Hopefully there will be more from them on this label. Bioconstructor's singer Alexandr Yakovlev left group and formed Bio, he also wrote music for Olga Voskonyan, whose track "Avtomobili" is now released on flexi-postcard by Baran. I think it's really special release.
I love reissue labels, which are run by enthusiasts; what's more surprising that someone cares about soviet-time music enough to make reissues. If you are interested in supporting, order those records.

viktors lapčenoks

here's nice track taken from ultradiskopanorama youtube channel. popstar Viktors Lapčenoks from Latvia is touching groovy prog-pop land. he was collaborating a lot with all big Latvian composers, including Raimonds Pauls, and was involved in many of Pauls' solo author albums with Nora Bumbiere. i have featured track from duo's earlier LP on my blog too, which kind of continues same theme.

goloshchekin

C60 05753-54

after long hiatus i try to be more active for a while. also i have some exciting news to share with you soon.
now let's start with nicest jazz record i found about year ago. it started as usual - fellow record collector had been to that lonely record crate at street fair before me and pulled out cool-looking record. just month later i found excellent copy from reusing center, that's how karma works. i knew Goloshchekin, but didn't know this record. he was main figure in Leningrad jazz scene. in 1979 released LP where he plays alone up to 10 instruments, thankfully not at same time. it is nice breezy album, but sounds too polished. here's earlier LP with modern jazz and bossanovas, also some vocal jazz tracks, with lovely Elvira Trafova, if i'm not wrong, husband of David. i don't like english language evergreens, but this wordless vocal track is super, long track with all kinds of emotions, keeps interesting during all the track.
there's earlier LP with same orchestra, also 7", which i hope to hear one day.

nerija

well, i'll try to post some Estonian tracks in February, but before i have to do something with my promise to post more Lithuanian tracks. so as today is Lithuanian independence day, I'll post one.
Nerija seemed to be pretty famous group in Soviet Lithuania, they released many albums during all their years, even one 2LP. what's sad, every album has only 1 good track, though usually it's awesome one.
so in future there will be more Nerija posted here, but today i'll post my find from last summer when I was in Kaunas and Vilnius. picked up some Nerija records, but this one was new to me. i guess it's their 1st album. B-side starts with psychedelic pop song, which you need to listen all the way to finish.

estradines_melodijos

Estradinės Melodijos - Sveikas, Bendraamži!

i found this record in Lithuania this summer. i didn't know exactly what it could be. it looked to be LP by typical soviet vocal instrumental group, which it exactly is. except it starts with instrumental, which is cool flute funk track. it has been featured in other blogs, so i have nothing else to say! it's good one and obviously soviet track, which amuses more listeners. i'll continue posting some lithuanian tracks on new year.

well, looks like i have been on summer vacation. there's no excuse for not posting meanwhile, but indeed i have been busy and lazy: moving to new flat, enjoying summer, not enjoying summer, listening records and writing emails. anyway on first week of august i was on "work" trip to Baltic states looking for records. i found some great Melodiya jazz records and discovered myself few lithuanian groovy records. got rare Imants Kalnins ost 7" and found few spares for my friends. though the best find seems to be most usual, most innocent looking record, which i bought only because it was cheap and it had few familiar names on it.
record i'm speaking about is soundtrack to movie "Uznai menja". i haven't seen it, but its soundtrack is written by Zatsepin, famous russian film music composer. his music have been featured in many films during last decades and he have always used modern styles. i have heard minimal jazzfunk on "Sannikov Land", fuzzy psych on "Between Sky and Earth" and synthsoul on "June 31st". though there have been some boring music too, so it wasn't very safe to buy this unknown record. thankfully i was surprised when i heard first track. wonderful, atmospheric theme song with lovely vocals by Tatjana Antsiferova, with dance rhythms, maybe it is unknown cosmic classic. or whatever. Tatjana's name was another sign of quality, she appeared also on "June 31st" soundtrack. she seemed to be quite known singer, but always stayed in the background. for example she was singing in films, but she didn't appear on screen. Tatyana has cute voice, at least she doesn't try to be opera singer. Araks is group responsible for music on album. they released a lot of records, but none came close to this soundtrack. though there's some good earlier tracks, but i don't think they are available on vinyl.
you can see song in actual context in movie from this videoclip

mirdza zivere

It was first Melodiya record I bought as second hand, it was then I started buying old vinyl records consciously, looking for good tunes, funk, jazz, rock. It was around 9 years ago, I had found Soulstrut forum and Rehash guys were posting there, and from their website I heard Josephino first time, though they had only picture of label, not cover. Apparently I had no idea, where to find old records then, fortunately there was functioning record store from Soviet Time in Tallinn's Old Town, where you could actually buy some old Melodiya stock, still on the racks after ten years of publishing, I had bought there Mahavok LP (estonian synthpop) as new item, but they didn't have second hand records there before until some point. So I was first time digging for old records and found this Mirdza Zivere I had read about, it was good start for my long time passion. Unfortunately I didn't find Zalatnay Sarolta LPs as I had hoped :D I bought also LP by Estonian fusion group Kaseke. So these were my first finds. I didn't see Zivere LP for a long time here in Estonia, it's still quite obscure here, though it's easier to find it in Riga. It should be more popular, as one side is produced by Latvian superstar Raimonds Pauls and other by famous Latvian composer Zigmars Liepins.
Story of my first digging has also bitter part - as I stepped into store I saw guy walking away from cashier with Collage "Käokiri" under his arm, why must I cry (it was onlyt two years ago when I finally found copy for myself, actually I found two copies same day).

anatoli korolev

С60-06009-10

Anatoli Korolev was russian pop singer, who had started singing in famous vocal group "Druzhba". In 1975 was released his solo album with VIA Vesjolye golosa. I had his single with same group from 1974, which had some nice instrumental background, even if poorly recorded, though vocals were bit boring, too professional. So few months back I found also LP, which shares some tracks with single, but has also some tracks, which have even better backings. Like track "Poyu o lyubvi" starts with nice fuzz guitar. I'll share with you song called "Mne ne nado zhalosti", with nice groovy band in the back and even if singer has too schooled voice, it is pleasant enough to like whole song.
Previous owner of my lp had put ranks behind all tracks, i have more records from same collection with those numbers. Obviously he had put worst mark to track I liked most!

Syabry - Distant Light
1986 C60 24697 008

by popular demand i'll post one modern soul nugget from my melodiya collection. here's Syabry, popular rock group from Belorussia, started releasing records from 1978. their records are full of modern production tricks, but have mostly have stayed bit boring, though i haven't heard their best lp from 1980. here's something reallly curious, it's their later less known album from 1986. i have no idea why i bought it. at home i listened to it and thought i'm idiot, but actually second track had some weird charm. really smooth song for russian machos, especially love vocals on chorus, damn, is it really that mysterious modern soul from Soviet Union. i have later shared it with some public and feedback has been positive. well, here new and old readers, Syabry.

serenaad trompetile

osta Jaan Kumani muusikat legaalselt

Valter Ojakäär "Vastu kerkivale kuule"
C60 07941-2

i have had to think so much about estonian trumpeter and ensemble leader Jaan Kuman lately, i should put some of this energy into blog too. also it will be teaser for thing me and my friend have been working on. soon there will be longer piece on Kuman, at first in Estonian, later maybe some translations too.
At first Jaan Kuman and his group was given opportunity to record 6 EPs, after that he got reputation as great arranger and trumpet player. So he got also job to do album of works by one of greatest Estonian pop and jazzmusic composers Valter Ojakäär. At first it was even supposed to be recorded by Georgi Garanjan and Melodiya ensemble (we can now only imagine how great it could have been). Though thinking of it took time and at last it was still decided to record in Tallinn by Estonian musicians. That's our luck, this album is most easier to get of all Kuman related records. There's even export version. First side of record has singers and is more pop record, though there's some soulful/funky arrangements. B-side is all instrumental jazz music, most of it is pretty upbeat and funky.
This song "Serenaad trompetile" was particularly brought out during our conversation. Composer himself had been happy with results and arranger was also satisfied. It's pretty old song, first recorded in 1955 by old first good trumpet player Abi Zeider, but Kuman was first good jazz player. Song was given new colours and it had been given new life. It really sounds so, we slight hint of funky rhythm and jangly guitar, topped with great brass playing, they tried to mimic big band, as they Estonian Radio had new recording equipment, they could use bit more tracks. Sometimes Kuman played all trompets himself. You can hear also girl singing, which by me gives really great accent to this instrumental. These are actually Collage girl singing, Kuman remembered that Ojakäär wasn't happy with result, but as they were lacking of time, they let girl choir recording be that way. Good for them!

Laine
1983 LP C60-18905-6

For some reason I listened to a lot of Melodiya disco records. Some of my favorite disco tracks have been posted here already, now I should post some well-known stuff too. Let's take Estonian disco classic!
Laine is quite old professional vocal ensemble, their first vinyl releases are from middle 60s. In the beginning of 70s were released two albums, 10" LP has some easy listening charm, otherwise they just sounded too professional, maybe good for estrada fans. They gave a lot of concerts, also with many popular singers, and their instrumental group had some best players.
Now let's go to 1983, when was released their another self-titled album, recorded in 1979 and 1982. Again here's quite a few typical Laine songs from weird folk songs to boring modern soul, but also three fantastic disco tracks. And this LP is loved because of these tracks and also played by brave dj's (like me on last Friday). Actually there's nothing to be ashamed, these songs are straight covers of disco classics. "Nüüd on mul muusika" is originally "I Love America" by Patrick Juvet. Other two tracks are credited to G. Malavasi (well, I guess it must be Mauro Malavasi), I haven't yet found their original. If actual LP is pressed bit poorly, then music production is quite wonderful. Songs are true to originals, but sound much softer thanks to orchestra arrangements. "Lõpulaul" has that wonderful 'middle-part' or 'breakdown' with great percussion sound, something so unbelievable for Soviet Estonian record. Another thing is lyrics. Both Malavasi written tracks have very conceptual part of record, at first they are singing about music, about their show, which is going to start just about now, how dancing connects us and last song "Lõpulaul" aka "Song of End" also has important task to finish record, that means how party is now over, but you'll remember music. Well, you can imagine how they always started and ended their concerts with same songs. "Nüüd on mul muusika" has great lyrics by our absurd poetry classic Ott Arder, another metatext about music, how they love music, disco music, which changes their lives. (Ma ei ole väga hea luuleteksti analüüsis)
It's hard not to love those songs if you're Estonian.

PS after listening all Mauro Malavasi produced tracks, I found original version of "Lõpulaul" - Peter Jacques Band "Walking On Music".

i think this record should be more loved by estonians, that's why i'm posting it. Voldemar Kuslap is famous estonian opera, musical and pop singer, but this record is recorded with Latvian Radio Light Music Orchestra and conducted by Aleksander Rjabov. one of the guys who brought bossanova to estonian popmusic, he has conducted also Marju Kuut and Uno Loop lps. so this record is a bit brother to these more popular records.
this record won my attention with song "Mõtlen sinule". i recognized it was sampled for very great song "Preilisid on ka tegelt niisama vaadata hea" from Estonian best mc (and best hiphop producer) Chalice's first album. i loved this hiphop track because of great melody and nerdy lyrics about watching girls. though it isn't original, so I can't be sure if this record was actually sampled. song is written by Cole Porter and this Kuslap versions is cover of "I Concentrate On You" from Frank Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim LP from 1969. so if anyone happens to like original, might want to hear this cover.
this LP has many great estonian songs, but not much for funk/jazz diggers. i'll upload another track from it, it's original this time, by another great Estonian composer Uno Naissoo. "Hobused" means 'horses' and it's great with quite typical galoping rhythm, almost morricone-like western movie soundtrack. maybe only in my fantasies, maybe not.

õde carrie

tänase väga intelligentse postituse on kirjutanud mu sõber Will ameerikast. Theodore Dreiseri romaani "Õde Carrie" on muusikaks valanud läti helilooja Raimonds Pauls. 1980ndate aastate algusest pärit plaat on täis diskolikke rütme ja teatraalsust, seda plaati on sämplinud muide salapärane hiphop artist Apasnõi Luk (loo leiab kogumikult Volüüm 1).
today's guest post is by my friend Will. this record has been sampled by mysterious estonian hiphop group Apasnõi Luk.

The Detectives

Prologue

"Sister Carrie"
A musical after T. Dreiser's novel
C60-12355-6
Music: Raimonds Pauls
Texts: J. Peters
Arranged by G. Rozenbergs

Latvian composer and keyboardist Raimonds Pauls is arguably the most famous post-war Soviet pop songwriter. Pauls' has a gift for pairing music with texts in a way that formally justifies his use of modern western styles to the listener and notorious Soviet cultural censors. Sister Carrie, with its negative portrayal of modern capitalism, was an excellent text to adapt for a western-style musical in 1978. Soviets loved the musical; Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar proved irrepressible in the early 70's soviet era. To soviet censors, songs about dirty capitalists were a fine excuse to use rock guitars. In fact, 1978 was the disco era, and the major struggles over western music were over; jazz, rock, and musicals had received official sanction as long as the state controlled them. Soviet authorities felt that disco wasn't a vessel for subversive political messages, and didn't fight it in the same way. I like the proto-hip-hop moody loopz and frantic orchestral disco arrangement (by trumpeter Gunars Rozenbergs) of Prologue. To me it evokes the bustle of the city. I also like jazzy scatting by Pauls' protege Mirdza Zivere on "Carrie's Ditty", and the singing and electric instrumentation on "The Detectives". I feel like Pauls also captured Drouet's character quality well with his dixie jazz-meets-pop musical motif. Anyways, its no secret why the theme of Sister Carrie appealed to Soviet authorities. The album notes read something about how sister carrie's story is bigger than her, it is the story of markets rising as stars ride, then crashing into the puddles in the street.

lithuanian disco 2

nii, leedu üritas eurovisioonil muljet avaldada kõigile kollektoritele, õnneks ei läinud see odav trikk neil läbi, kuigi ebay otsingud on igatahes mõneks ajaks häiritud.
mul on tunne, et õnneks me ei tea suurt midagi leedu muusikast. leedu vinüüle liigub ka väga harva. palju lihtsam on näiteks saada leedu päritolu bootlegvinüülil Cocteau Twins kolmas album kui mõni leedu estraadiplaat. üks maailmas tuntumaid leedu plaate on muidugi Argo "Discophonia" - kaunase muusikateadlaste sünteesitud instrumentaaldisko.
puhtalt empiirilise tähelepaneku järgi tundub kõige tuntum vokaalinstrumentaalansambel olevat Nerija. nende kohta leiab isegi kohalikukeelset infot netis. neil on ilmunud päris palju albumeid, minul on kolm erinevat ja üks duubel-lp on neil kindlasti veel. nende esimesest plaadist tuleb veel suvel juttu, nii et loodan selleks ajaks nende kohta parema info kokku koguda.
kui mõned aastad hiljem lindistati üks kummaline Stevie Wonderi kaver ja aastad varem saadi hakkama psych versiooniga leedu rahvamuusikast, siis selle 1981. aasta plaadi olin ma kõrvale heitnud kui jama plaadi. põhiliselt häirisid mind vokaalid. nüüd, kui ma olen plaati saatmas austavamasse plaadikogusse, hakkan isegi igatsema seda plaati. siin on ju kaks täiesti lahedat disko lugu ja see häiriv vokaal hakkab muutuma hoopis loo parimaks küljeks. Liutauras Čeprackas on ikka laheda häälega mees...

here in estonia, i don't know many old lithuanian groups, even if i'm hardcore melodiya collector. i have posted here different lithuanian records already. then there is also Argo, famous group of lithuanian disco technicians. their "Discophonia" LP is pretty known and was pressed in big quantities. by records i have found it looks like most popular VIA was Nerija. i have three LPs by them and there's even more.
you can find information in lithuanian and russian on Nerija. i'm going to do post about their first album in summer, so i'll try to get more trivia for that time. i bought this album on strength of their debut i already had. also sleeve has lovely band photo. though i didn't like it. later i realized there's some nice disco tracks, but i don't like vocals. as i'm just giving it away to right hands, i listened to it again. and now i found even her vocals amusing... or is she she, isn't Liutauras Čeprackas boy's name?

moldaavia disko

this week saw end of great radio show Muusikat nõudlikule maitsele, presented by almighty Vaiko Eplik, who even called me to his show to play Melodiya records few times. i dedicate today's entry to that show. moldavian synth-disco. this really describes how incredible his show was. would i have thought that i'll pick up some random melodiya release with very random guy on cover, only because it's in Moldavian, in exotic language, and it has instrumental ensemble. nothing else. do you know any moldavian artists at all? i know their great beat group Norok, which i heard first time in Vaiko's show and later i found this record even in my father's humble collection. so i buy this LP, put on turntable and find track translated as "The Rose" is quite amusing for it's production and alienating vocals and language. recorded in 1985, released 1986. album called "I Have but One Song".
EDIT: he was singer in Norok!

today is sunny day here in tallinn, my hometown. for strange reasons i like may. also songs dedicated to may. today i present you two versions of same track called "Tallinn in May", written by Azeri jazzpianist Vagif Mustafazadeh.
i found this song from seven inch in record store. i was wondering why bulgarian singer Emilija Markova with bulgarian orchestra is performing song "Tallinn in May" and even that it was written by famous jazz composer from Azerbaijani. it was nice, that it was cool scat vocal jazz song. i started to search for that song from net and ended at site with all soviet jazz festival LPs. this song in it's original form and performed by Mustafazadeh trio could be found on Tallinn '67 jazz festival LP. which i actually had in my collection. so i rediscovered this song and this lp. it is very interesting that this compilation lp was released at all. it was last jazz festival in tallinn for over 10 years. there performed many western artists, including Charles Lloyd from USA, it was too much for officials. so it is interesting that they still could release 2LP set. it is great document, many soviet groups, including first recording of very young Tõnu Naissoo, great jazz pianist, who is still active.

värviline maailm

Fix "Värviline maailm" LP 1978
C60-11543-4

Thank you for all comments about Golubye Gitary. To prove you right I'll post record I find actually good. Fix is Estonian popular group, they have many hits and book about them was just published. I haven't read it, so no more information.
"Värviline maailm" is their first album and it features classic line-up. Over 10 years ago I read that Fix is supposed to have one great song, "Ulila". Fortunately I found LP from my parents' collection and started to love this song - real soviet soul, wonderful melody played on electric piano. Now many years later I'm listening to this song more critically and find that rhythm is too humppa and actually Silvi's vocals can be annoying, though she hasn't developed her very theatrical tone on this album yet. Her vocals ruin 4th track on album "Fire", which is instrumentally pretty neat and good for samplers too. Album starts with instrumental track, funk rock style, it translated as "Rough Road" on sleeve. It's a good one and it is rumored that break has been sampled by some American ug hiphop producer. A-side ends with interesting soviet disco track, it's made hilarious by unexpected and loud guitar solo. B-side is total waste of vinyl with bad country.
This record has at least once been sold as secret psych record on ebay, let me laugh for a moment... it is common record over here, don't pay too much. More Fix songs can be heard at sovietgroove blog.

gintarine pora

jätkame leedu funki otsingutega! kui aus olla, on see plaat juba mõnda aega mul olnud. selle plaadi teist osagi olen siin blogis tutvustanud. võtame nüüd ette selle varasema versiooni - kaks funk instrumentaali. üks väga hea ja teine lahjem väikevend. lahedad kidraefektid, lahe groove, esimene lugu tundub ka kuidagi kahtlaselt tuttav. meie blogi sõber Will taipas ära, et tegu on kaveriga Buddy Milesi loost "Them Changes". ümbrisel on aga autoriks mainitud ansambli kunstiline liider Tamošiunas. võibolla tõesti, selles tantsuversioonis ju vokaali pole. esitab leedu estraadiorkester Oktava, bändi liidri juhitud grupp lindistas ka eelpool mainitud järje.

searching for lithuanian funk! Oktava recorded ball danceroom music LP, with all your fave dances: sambas, rumbas, foxtrot and very modern thing called - beat. beat means thankfully funk. same group recorded also another LP few years later, that i have posted here, with weird rhythmic track. this one has more straight funky sounds. though my friend dj Willderness pointed out that last track on side A called "Viskas kinta" is cover of Buddy Miles "Them Changes". that's cool, but it's cooler that on sleeve it is actually credited to Lithuanian leader of Oktava - M. Tamošiunas. anyway great version!
