estradines_melodijos

Estradinės Melodijos - Sveikas, Bendraamži!

i found this record in Lithuania this summer. i didn't know exactly what it could be. it looked to be LP by typical soviet vocal instrumental group, which it exactly is. except it starts with instrumental, which is cool flute funk track. it has been featured in other blogs, so i have nothing else to say! it's good one and obviously soviet track, which amuses more listeners. i'll continue posting some lithuanian tracks on new year.

Jaan Kuman is Estonian trumpeter, who has been featured in my blog many times and gathered a lot of fans all over the world. unfortunately his records are really rare and expensive, so his amazing music has been mostly unavailable to wider audience. now he has self-released cd compilation of some best work from 70s with his ensemble. from wonderful jazz funk to masterful easy listening. you get tracks from 1st 7" "Estraadipalu", best from Uno Naissoo and Tantsurütme records and some unreleased stuff. he was great arranger and musician, which you can hear on this compilation. i suppose it would be cool to buy this comp to support him.
i don't think it's available through any international mail order yet, but if you want it, send me email, i'll help you with buying it. it costs around 10-11 euros in local stores. i have nothing to do with this release, just helping to spread the word and share good music.

jazz komfort

that's one curious single. for example, how many jazz singles is there. there isn't many on melodiya, though we have Kuman and Tammik singles. also it's interesting they were also pressed in Riga. and that group, who are they? i hope someone else will make better blog post.
i mean, first time i saw their name was on compilation "Keep on Playing" (check last post), they were backing Estonian singer Tõnis Mägi on nice disco song in Russian. what's more interesting that Estonian version "Peegel" is actually credited to Muusik Seif. so who actually made it? it is bit suspicious why jazz group is backing pop singer.
then you can see their name on 1st volume of Leningrad Jazz Festival 83 LP (C60 21537 000). and then there's this 7" single. all tracks are not originals, but have new arrangements. they are credited to some D. Sampl and R. Brown. more mysteries. anyway it's quite groovy single, even if there's not breaks or any other fancy stuff. nice electric piano, nice guitars. first side is slower groovy downtempo jazz. other side starts with so called ballad and second track is 2 minutes short groovy jazz funk. which you can hear here. other tracks will be hopefully available at soviet groove blog.

modo

I wonder why I haven't featured Modo records in my blog, even though it's one of my favorite Latvian group. I got their two EPs early in my Melodiya collecting history. At first they were led by Raimonds Pauls, they are also featured on R. Pauls "Naktsputni" LP, later they were led by Zigmars Liepins, another keyboard wizard from Latvia. Modo first EP should be known through blogs, it's good fusion single with two good tracks. Bonus is great picture sleeve, which features also someone shredding on organ.
My big favorite is Modo disco hit "Spele Vel", I know two local DJ's who have been rocking it for a while. There's scarce 7", but it's also on common Melodiya compilation "Igraj Eshhjo". Then there's single with blue cover, I haven't listened to it for a while, but I think it was pretty boring. So I had impression their later stuff isn't good, including that Modo 7" (C62-11841-2). And I totally ignored it at Riga's flea market this summer.
Recently I bought box of seven inch singles, because it contained infamous Disko orkestra 7" with cover of "For What It's Worth", known from expensive LP. This box had also great copy of Modo single. I was surprised to find 3 good disco tracks out of 4 songs. That's good. You get honest soviet disco "Stress" and slow burner "Romeo" by my fave Mirdza Zivere, and atmospheric cosmic funk "Kustiba", all full of strings, wonderful vocals and cool keyboards.
I have uploaded "Kustiba", best track on EP.

Tiit Pauluse muusikasaade

our friend Kristjan Jansen made interview with Estonian jazzguitarist Tiit Paulus, who played also on Jaan Kuman "Tantsurütme" records, his guitar sound is one point of their greatest tracks. interview is in Estonian, but there's quite a lot of music too.

tatjana

Александр Зацепин "Узнай меня"
Татьяна Анциферова

well, looks like i have been on summer vacation. there's no excuse for not posting meanwhile, but indeed i have been busy and lazy: moving to new flat, enjoying summer, not enjoying summer, listening records and writing emails. anyway on first week of august i was on "work" trip to Baltic states looking for records. i found some great Melodiya jazz records and discovered myself few lithuanian groovy records. got rare Imants Kalnins ost 7" and found few spares for my friends. though the best find seems to be most usual, most innocent looking record, which i bought only because it was cheap and it had few familiar names on it.
record i'm speaking about is soundtrack to movie "Uznai menja". i haven't seen it, but its soundtrack is written by Zatsepin, famous russian film music composer. his music have been featured in many films during last decades and he have always used modern styles. i have heard minimal jazzfunk on "Sannikov Land", fuzzy psych on "Between Sky and Earth" and synthsoul on "June 31st". though there have been some boring music too, so it wasn't very safe to buy this unknown record. thankfully i was surprised when i heard first track. wonderful, atmospheric theme song with lovely vocals by Tatjana Antsiferova, with dance rhythms, maybe it is unknown cosmic classic. or whatever. Tatjana's name was another sign of quality, she appeared also on "June 31st" soundtrack. she seemed to be quite known singer, but always stayed in the background. for example she was singing in films, but she didn't appear on screen. Tatyana has cute voice, at least she doesn't try to be opera singer. Araks is group responsible for music on album. they released a lot of records, but none came close to this soundtrack. though there's some good earlier tracks, but i don't think they are available on vinyl.
you can see song in actual context in movie from this videoclip

mirdza zivere

It was first Melodiya record I bought as second hand, it was then I started buying old vinyl records consciously, looking for good tunes, funk, jazz, rock. It was around 9 years ago, I had found Soulstrut forum and Rehash guys were posting there, and from their website I heard Josephino first time, though they had only picture of label, not cover. Apparently I had no idea, where to find old records then, fortunately there was functioning record store from Soviet Time in Tallinn's Old Town, where you could actually buy some old Melodiya stock, still on the racks after ten years of publishing, I had bought there Mahavok LP (estonian synthpop) as new item, but they didn't have second hand records there before until some point. So I was first time digging for old records and found this Mirdza Zivere I had read about, it was good start for my long time passion. Unfortunately I didn't find Zalatnay Sarolta LPs as I had hoped :D I bought also LP by Estonian fusion group Kaseke. So these were my first finds. I didn't see Zivere LP for a long time here in Estonia, it's still quite obscure here, though it's easier to find it in Riga. It should be more popular, as one side is produced by Latvian superstar Raimonds Pauls and other by famous Latvian composer Zigmars Liepins.
Story of my first digging has also bitter part - as I stepped into store I saw guy walking away from cashier with Collage "Käokiri" under his arm, why must I cry (it was onlyt two years ago when I finally found copy for myself, actually I found two copies same day).

anatoli korolev

С60-06009-10

Anatoli Korolev was russian pop singer, who had started singing in famous vocal group "Druzhba". In 1975 was released his solo album with VIA Vesjolye golosa. I had his single with same group from 1974, which had some nice instrumental background, even if poorly recorded, though vocals were bit boring, too professional. So few months back I found also LP, which shares some tracks with single, but has also some tracks, which have even better backings. Like track "Poyu o lyubvi" starts with nice fuzz guitar. I'll share with you song called "Mne ne nado zhalosti", with nice groovy band in the back and even if singer has too schooled voice, it is pleasant enough to like whole song.
Previous owner of my lp had put ranks behind all tracks, i have more records from same collection with those numbers. Obviously he had put worst mark to track I liked most!

i was guest in DJ Orav's radioshow Jazzitup few weeks ago, it's still possible to listen it from stream. we played eclectic set of East Euro records, from rock to disco and even jazz. Orav had some crazy Hungarian records, I tried hard to impress everyone.
for Melodiya fans, check obscure version of Kalina by Charivni Gitary or rare Estonian jazz by Tõnu Naissoo Trio.
